Malmo to Worms, Germany

April 13, 1903

Malmo , Sweden , Monday 4.13

Train left Stockholm 9.10- first part of the way was through rich farming lands, with good houses and buildings, resembling our home land, later part, through rugged and unproductive lands. The forenoon bright and cloudless, but cool, looked like a May day, took one photo of train, between Stockholm and Malmo . The afternoon squally and with two snow storms, whitening the ground- eat two meals in the dining car- reaching Malmo 10.40 p.m. “Kasper Hotel.”

Tuesday April 14 1903

Enjoyed a good night's rest at Malmo . Up at 6.15, shaved breakfast walk and then came to the steamer 8.45 for a two hour ride on the boat to Copenhagen , Denmark- arriving at 10.30. Had our dinner at new “Hotel Bristol” Copenhagen and left 12.30 noon for Korsor Germany where we arrived at 3 p.m. went direct to the steamer, where I am writing these notes, for a five hour ride to Kiel 8 p.m. where we will take the railroad car for Hamburg. Cool and showers today- I am wearing my heavy overcoat and grey knit coat, worn between my vest and coat- the ladies are wearing their furs.

(In 1878 Hamburg shipowner and businessman Hermann Dahlström presented to the German government a concept for the construction of a canal which took both commercial and military considerations into account. The canal was to go from the mouth of the Elbe to Eckernförde. In 1886 it was announced that a shipping canal that was suitable for the German navy would be made from the mouth of the Elbe via Rendsburg to Kiel Bay . On 3rd June 1887 Kaiser Wilhelm I laid the foundation stone of the North Sea-Baltic Canal. On 21st June 1895, after 8 years of work and at a cost of 156 million Marks, Kaiser Wilhelm II opened the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal, as the North Sea-Baltic Canal was called until 1948, in Holtenau).

Our meals today in three countries; breakfast in Sweden , Dinner in Denmark , supper in Germany . Arrived at Streit's Hotel, Hamburg 11 p.m. enjoyed our night's rest in our old room # 59, up Wednesday morning6 a.m. breakfast and off to Bremen 8.06 a.m.

Bremen Park Haus

Wednesday April 15 03 On the Train

Morn cloudy and cold, had compartment in the car alone. Reached Bremen 10 a.m. in a regular March snow storm. In Sweden the buds on the trees only starting, here in Germany the trees are in blossom and some beginning to leaf.

Many people at the large RR Station. Stopped between trains at Bremen 10.00 &1 p.m.- took drive in snow storm & rain in a covered carriage- We were in the Cathedral, beautiful building, streets & buildings- wrote letters and lunched at the De'L'Europe Hotel- Osnabruk, Munster, Essen, etc. Rain and Snow at intervals during the afternoon. The country quite level, trenches in the fields, full of water. Fair farming lands, with some wastelands.

The Krupp Works Main Floor

Passed through Essen where some 40,000 men are employed in the great Krupp works, manufacturing Cannons, Firearms of every description, even building war ships at Kiel- Krupp worth his millions. For miles around coal mines & iron ore abound, and for some 20 miles before reaching Cologne , the distance seemed almost one continuous city- This district is the strong-hold of the Roman Catholic Church in Germany .

We passed through Dusseldorf , forty minutes before reaching Cologne . Fleidner's Deaconess Houses at Keisersworth are very near- can be reached by electric cars, but as the train was late, so could not take the time to stop- we reached Cologne in a dense snow storm- large RR station. Many people at station. “Hotel Disch” Cologne for the night- nice room good supper and good night's rest.

Cologne Germany

Thursday April 16 1903

Arose 6.30, shaved, Breakfast 8 a.m.- morning cloudy cleared off later- took carriage for 1 ½ hour ride, visited the Roman Catholic Church Ursala, containing the bones of 11,000 Virgins massacred 1,400 years ago, lead by St. Ursala from England to Rome, killed in Cologne when returning.

Cologne Street Scene 1903

Also visited the grand Cathedral- the largest and grandest church that we have as yet seen- It was Soul Stirring- Cologne is a large and crowded city- mostly Catholic. Stopped at Hotel Disch, where Dr. Stall stopped 30 years ago- had light lunch and left 12.00 for Mayence ( Mainz ), saw the fortified walls around Cologne as were leaving.

The View from the Train

From the time we left Cologne, until we reached “Bingen on the Rhein,”, we had a good view of the river Rhine, mountains and old castles from the train- the Scenery was grand- took three Photos. The cars has a passageway along the side, and this enabled me to get a fine view of its vine-clad hills and castled crags. After leaving “Bingen on the Rhine ” the country is more level to Mayence, where we arrived at 3.30 p.m. Took a drive of 45 minutes through the city & returned. April weather sunshine & squalls- still quite cold. Left at 4.38 for Wormes , Germany .
