Best Buns

There is a regular networking meeting we have established to stay current, and leverage our contacts and experience. This is the first one this morning, scheduled for 0745. We have chosen a charming little bakery in Shirlington Villiage to meet, convenient to dwelling work and interstate. “Best Buns” is the name of the place, and it has a vaguely salacious logo and excellent bread.

I should have got up much earlier. Then I could talk about the dramatic developments in Ulster this morning, when Unionists and Rebels sit down to govern jointly, and there is a new President in France, too, the son of an immigrant who is going to get tough on immigrants.

I would have to mention the latest charming gaff by the President. He said the Queen of England, Defender of the Faith and successors to the Emperors of India, was something like three hundred years old.

He might have been nervous over the prospect of wearing full white tie regalia for the State Dinner last night, which is the first of his administration, which is at least a thousand gaffs long now.

At the greeting ceremony, the President winked at the Queen, quipping that she “Gave him a look that only a mother could give a child.”

It was high humor, or at least what passes for it here these days. There was no report about whether Her Majesty was amused, but it may be that is no longer the big deal that it was, long ago. The Queen is still very popular here, representing the Last of the Grown Ups. Many thought that was what they were voting for here, but it turns out they were wrong.

Considering the prospective candidates in this new endless campaign, all I can say is, “Long live the Queen.”
