A short one this morning, fellow Citizens. We here at the Scribblers Section at rural Refuge Farm have been reading a remarkable book about the events of our times. It is a fascinating book, and the Fire Ring occupants are struck by something remarkable. We have had the opportunity to live our lives in what may be the most astonishing time not in the history of our Nation, but the World.
In brief, it is that our species- not just we citizens- have lived in the American Century. Our Nation provided a moment in time in which all who live on this earth were able to do so in greater peace, greater security and general happiness than at any other time since our ancestors walked on the veldt under the same bright sun.
Was our effort perfect? Of course not. Was it the best? Simply put, the unambiguous answer is “yes.”
Petr Zeihan lays out his analysis of what we have done to make this a better world, and advances the idea that what was built in our Nation’s time may be the best in our collective history. It is an interesting piece of analysis that is filled with a certain foreboding. The astonishing prosperity brought to this earth enabled unprecedented growth in population and well being. According to Zeihan, it was a system enabled by the willingness of the United States of America to provide peace on the seas and in the air above them.
He argues that our current unwillingness to continue that global security blanket will cause a fracturing of the peace that sprawled across the American Century. He argues that what is coming will be difficult for those who prospered in a time when “armies” and “wars” were not the defining qualities of every year. America provided a lasting peace and a better world for all.
The times are likely changing once more. Zeihan argues that America will survive it better than most for a variety of reasons. He argues that glorious days like this are not the End of the World, but rather the beginning of the end of a unique and good period in our world. The is a coming change in how it all works.
On this 4th of July, we salute our flag, and Americans who made this remarkable blink in eternity happen. And we remind you, we have all contributed to make this possibly the best it has ever been. Thanks to America. And her Americans.
