Marlow’s Don’t Forget Where We Came From

Editor’s Note: Morning! The Farm is awakening from the holiday repast. The clean-up was complete this morning with the ritual of emptying the dishwasher, and the over-large white plates redeposited to their slumber on an upper shelf, accessible to some only with the step ladder. Marlow thought a little deeper than the Editorial section here at the farm, and does it in verse. Join him as The Marlows continue their voyage into the mysteries and joys of their Coastal Empire.

Author’s Note: Our Fourth came in two parts — a rooftop jazz brunch along the Savannah River and then a communal gathering and meal with 30 or so folks around a friend’s newly built, backyard pool as the sun set. We heard several new origin stories and additional snippets from others we hadn’t seen since before the plague. It was marvelous, especially the home-made dishes of locally sourced ingredients as well as the children and pets roaring about the yard and pool.

With all the silliness emanating from certain, far-off, news opinion centers, the thoughts below surfaced in tribute to those we shared our Fourth with.

When we forget where we come from, it’s too easy to complain.

Just remember that fools only see the mischiefs that are past. (Kobe Bryant)

Don’t Forget Where We Come From

From the streets where we grew up on
To where the sidewalk ends
Our family we never see, lovers and our friends
Who we were when we started out to who we have become
Don’t forget we’re not there yet
Don’t forget where we come from

From Pacific’s emerald coast where wood fire smoke clings to redwood trees
To sleepy Atlantic seaside villages with steady ocean breezes
Past mountain creeks to where a big muddy river runs
Don’t forget we’re not there yet
Don’t forget where we come from

Seems like only yesterday when we first went on our own
We’ve gone such a long, long way, now look how far we’ve gone
The rearview mirror is always clearer than what is yet to come
Don’t forget we’re not there yet
Don’t forget where we come from

Please don’t forget we’re not there yet
Don’t forget where we come from
Where the wheat fields and the tall cities are growing
Arctic chilly winds are blowing

Ocean tidal forces are flowing
Across America’s great divide
Big Apple, Big Tech, Big Easy, Big Sky Country
Panhandles, prairies, and painted deserts

East coast, West coast
Blue places, Red spaces
Land of the midnight sun
Don’t forget we’re not there yet
Don’t forget where we come from
Please don’t forget we’re not there yet
Don’t forget where we come from
