Letter to the Editor

Editor’s Note: Marlow wrote this morning from his place on the Eastern Shore, already agitated by the historic moment celebrated in today’s edition of The Daily. He offers a particular moment in family history to justify his reaction to the assertion in the headlines that the solution to the energy crisis has arrived, along with another glass of Sherry and a short course of instruction in crypto-currency.

Are we not entertained by this latest sciency razzle dazzle?

They claim a 150% increase in fusion reaction energy output from the laser/s energy input.

Down in the fine print below the trumpeting headlines, we find that the reaction triggering lasers required 100 times the enery of the fusion reaction output.

Then, there’s that pesky issue of what a fusuion energy reactor mught look like. Family connections being what they are, my father, who holds patents from his USS Nautilus reactor fuel rod research work back in the late 40s and early 50s for a Navy Captain named Rickover. He said to me repeatedly over half a century of such DOE announcements — “the materials science research breakthroughs alone for fusion reactors will take multiple Nobel prize winning thoughts, an Einstein (my .02: or two), several Oppenheimers,” and a squad of Rickovers in and out of uniform.
