Swamp Postcard: London Edition

This has been a busy week for the amateur historians out there. The decisive battle at Midway began on the 4th, ending on the 7th.

Two years later, Allied Forces made a bold gamble when Ike looked at the skies on June 5th, and decided the largest amphibious operation in history- and perhaps the most significant battle in history- was a “Go” for the 6th, and the massive operation began to lurch forward.

The President was on pretty good behavior during the visit and got on well with Her Majesty the Queen. There were several other interesting comments that swirled around the state visit.

Former Monty Python funnyman John Cleese suggested that London was no longer an English city, a notion to which some took umbrage.

Mr. Trump hd a parallel spat with London’s mayor, who has presided over an epidemic of knife attacks. Neither was polite, and the Mayor approved the flight of the Baby Trump Blimp. It was with interest that I saw that the balloon had been attacked with a pair of scissors wielded by a woman described as a Trump supporter.

The official party will visit Normandy before returning to the swamp to see the beaches consecrated to sacrifice by the Brits and Yanks and Canadians in 1944. There were parachute drops and classic aircraft like the C-47 Dakotas that hauled troops and gliders to the landing grounds. It gave me a chill: by the time we get to the 80th anniversary the ranks of the veterans will be thinned again.

Consensus was that protestors only numbered a third or less of the size of the ones that greeted Mr. Trump the last time. The notorious tabloid Fleet Street press response was fairly muted, though the American media continued the now-regular dose of negativity.

The First Family seems to be having a wonderful time. Forgive me if I am glad I am not there. There are a lot of fish frying back here on the muddy banks of the Potomac, and trade wars with Mexico and China with which to deal.
