National Disasters

I have to say, this has been the best season of national disasters ever. I got a note responding to mine that indicates my Turkish pal has so far avoided trouble with the returning caliphate. Good news, and so far, a disaster avoided. Here, along the old front lines of a war that used to be a century and a half old, Grace and I have navigated the COVID-19 disaster so far by using common sense. Be in the country, minimize contact with other humans, wear a mask, if necessary, dine well and stay abreast of the disaster on the big flat screen television. They are trying to rouse us to more panic as the election approaches, and I will be interested to see how it is played in locales across the country.

On top of this perfectly managed response to plague, a hurricane- wait, tropical storm, wait, hurricane is raking its claws across our Virginia coast. Dire warnings accompanied its approach, including an ominous warning from our electric co-op that we might lose power in the flooding and high winds. On high alert, though without actually staying up to see them, the rains came overnight in a persistent and insistent pelting, but as I write, patches of blue sky and sunshine fill the morning. Best tropical storm ever.

So, nature being right all the time, I assume that everything will be just fine if we let it alone. The networks are trying to re-generate panic. Dr. Birx warned us here in the country that we had escaped infection only because we followed common sense, but the plague could overwhelm us still, and the empty hospitals might suddenly fill with country COVID casualties.

After the evidence of this bizarre year, I have my doubts. But at Refuge Farm, we are going to continue common sense practices, shopping for food on the internet, and generally avoiding contact with both humans and the hysteria emanating from our bigger cities.

If the next disaster is the election, we will be ready. I saw a note from our friends at the Postal Service, warning us that they are perilously near saturation. I am sure a few million absentee ballots mailed willy-nilly will only add to the fun. Like you, I will be interested in seeing how they are going to play this one.

I am sure it will be as colorful as all the other disasters.
