Weather Report: Fire in the Whole
Exciting week, right? You should see the pile of digits reflecting the thoughts and raw emotions of people who have dealt with the litany of memorable actions with which America has played a major role down through the years. Some of the Writers Section participated in the evacuation of Saigon, now 46 years in the past. Distant, but it fed into my decision to join the Nation’s Navy. And not so distant, the reaction, muddled as it was, to the Embassy seizure in Tehran just four years after the Embassy roof in Saigon was so crowded.
The other ones, leading to the emotional response to the 9/11 attacks, helped lead to this one, orchestrated by some of the same people who denied support to the Vietnamese allies so long ago, and are still in the middle of things. Or at least on the periphery of them.
But it is still curious as a matter of timing. Despite the events of the day, both houses of Congress are on Summer break. The Press Secretary is interfering with her vacation as the President returns to his home in Delaware. Is it disquieting that the Government, which confronts the crises in bold face above seems content to wait until September as our kids mask up to return to school?
Since the Writers Section has already visited Belmont Farms this week, they are well-supplied with social lubricants, and are prepared, if necessary, to move from the Loading Dock all the way around the picturesque farm house to the Fire Pit out front, just in case it is necessary. Based on declarations from the podium in the White House, we are prepared to get a third shot of emergency vaccine in case the unvaccinated threaten us (again), mask up (if necessary) and then, fully injected and facially-covered, be prepared to return to normal.
There was some discussion about what exactly that might be in these evolving times. We talked for some time, and had to send one f the Interns down to the truck to fetch some of the consumables from Belmont Farms. We are agreed on that. The rest of this is going to play out as it will. But we took a test vote on who would be willing to go back to Taiwan’s defense if it would be useful.
I have been asked to keep that quiet for the moment. Announcing something like that would be as nuts as telling the enemy when you were going to flee, right? There was a report that the Government would shut down if our representatives do not raise the amount of money we owe to other people around the world so we can keep on keepin’-on the way we have become accustomed to. Belmont Farms has agreed to keep production at an accelerated but sustainable levels.
The designated note-taking Intern wrote it all down. “They” were good and got most of it. Some seemed a little disjointed though through lack of familiarity. “They” wrote “whole” instead the other kind. We know about that one. If you find yourself at the bottom of one, the answer is to stop digging.
