Weather Report

A challenging morning on all fronts under clear chill Piedmont skies. The latest thrust of arctic air has visited, with the little sensor outside the kitchen window reading an even dozen at first reading: “12.” Splash was aware of the cold front, and had established a warm spot indoors. Except for that small gap at the foot of the side door that permits a thin tendril of Canadian cold air to enter. Splash solved the problem by folding a knitted blanket into an effective blocking mechanism held in place by his ample posterior.

This being a compendium of disparate events, some of them about living people, our young Attorney had one of the folding chairs closest to the fire raging in the cast iron stove. She was alert for any inadvertent disparagement of public officials, which would naturally be not be tolerated in any orderly society. There was a slight hiccough in the morning over an announcement by the Speaker of the House that she was not retiring and would continue to serve in the House of Representatives even if her majority is lost in the impending mid-term elections. DeMille waved a dismissive hand. “Those elections are still nearly a year away. They will play out as they will. In the meantime, we are mobilizing troops to send to Poland.”

“So, like we aren’t supposed to speculate on NATO’s enlargement to include former members of the Warsaw Pact? And how that might have made Mr. Putin nervous?”

“It is only the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, Albania and Croatia, Montenegro and North Macedonia?”

“Right. You can see there might be some room for disagreement.”

“Maybe there can be some room for discussion. But we took a short poll this morning, biased naturally due to the sample population, and we found we are generally opposed to another land war in Europe.”

“The first two last century were enough. And the weapons are much better this time.”

Melissa frowned. “I suppose we will just have to see how this works out. And avoid leaving the property.”

There seemed to be general agreement on that, even if the weather report is a little sketchy this week. Even our attorney agreed on that.
