Excitement Reigns at Refuge Farm!
This is a preliminary announcement of a project decades in the making. Working with the outstanding staff at Politics & Prose in DC, we are about to launch publication of an epic history of a Great American, RADM Donald “Mac” Showers. We worked together on the book, episode by episode, through his amazing World War II experience as one of legendary code-breaker Joe Rochefort’s team in the Dungeon at Station HYPO. Then his service on FADM Nimitz’s staff forward on Guam, where he was responsible for the Estimates section that predicted the casualties to be suffered in the invasion of the Home Islands. They were horrific, and supported the decision to utilize the power of the atom to end the greatest conflict in Human History.
Then came an account of his experience in the establishment of the modern Intelligence Community, the Vietnam War, and the tumult of Watergate.
After his remarkable career in uniform, he was selected to join CIA as a senior civilian to help establish the FISA courts and manage the intrigue associated with the end of the Cold War.
You would think two careers in historic times would be sufficient, but his lovely wife was struck down by an early onset of the disease that also took my parents, and those of many in our world. For the rest of his life, he cared for her as long as he could. And then he devoted he rest of his life to helping others to weather the brutal seas of the loss of loved ones. That is when we started the project to tell a life story from the fertile plains of Iowa in the Great Depression to a meetings with the Queen of England and all the five star officers of the American military establishment.
It is an exciting time here. Plans include a handsome hard-cover edition and a llarge format trade paperback. More will follow as the presses warm up!
With great pride and pleasure,
