Arrias and His Muse: Morning Chorus in the Swamp
My Muse walked the dogs this morning…
’Tis my own heavenly chorus,
Must be a hundred birds chirping away,
As I walk the dogs at sunrise,
These little angels welcome the new day.
Busy little hummingbirds humming,
As they dart from flower to flower,
The most remarkable aviators,
I marvel at their skill and power.
Above a Pileated Woodpecker
Raps away looking for ants,
His tapping keeps the beat
And the others join with their chants.
Sparrows, Blue birds, and the Cardinals –
Dressed in the finest scarlet,
Flying from tree to tree,
Parading about as if a harlot!
Finches, Robins, Orioles,
High above magnificently soars a vulture,
Exceedingly ugly when up close,
A necessary part of nature’s culture.
Within an hour or so it’s done,
The rest of the world will have stirred,
But for now they sing to greet the day,
A song only I have heard.
