Weather Report: Food Outlook

It is hard to get adjusted to this tempo. We have been covering the Russian “Special Military Operation” in Ukraine for months now, and have gotten the weekly summary down to “Russia Grinds ON,” and “Ukraine gets something long range.”

This morning, we thought we would get you a quick update on one of the “whys” to the elements of the big story.

Food is going to be both scarce and expensive this fall. We have mentioned that before, and the contribution of the Ukraine war and sanctions and the rest of it. But what we thought we would mention this morning is that only part of this situation is a result of bloodthirsty Kremlin leadership. The rest of it- high gas prices, shortages of fertilizer, broken supply chain dynamics- is completely deliberate. You have to say it a little quickly, but it is billed as “an opportunity” to do something.

We think it is the same thing we have been saving since the first Earth Day, only now we are saving agriculture, too!

They tell us replacing the fertilizer with the organic stuff will work out just fine, and the problems in Sri Lanka are just a mistake. And the 9.1% inflation they announced this morning is just a blip or something. You know, like back in 1981.

We just wanted to lay out the fundamental and basic changes that are in progress. You could argue the energy thing- the disaster Europe in entering this winter- is something we need to do. At the Fire Ring down at Refuge Farm, we like to think that doing something this dramatic- bigger than going to the Moon- would have been demonstrated in a successful test to make sure we are ready for change. As it turns out, we are actually doing that. Only they didn’t tell us first.

We will just have to see how it goes, right?
