Life & Island Times: Georgia Election

Editor’s Note: Marlow contributes an update on his Coastal Empire election marathon. Since all the rest of us have been wondering (for months?) about who will lead the U.S. Senate, this account of the endless series of tabulations may be useful. Current standing? 50 Dem, 49 Rep, with the Peach State still undecided.

Georgia Election: Strange Days

Strange days behind us, stranger days ahead of us.

We voted early down here yesterday making it three times we’ve done the deed this year.

Despite the rain, unseasonably cold temps and overcast skies, they had taken down the circus tents (love it when the election officials have a sly sense of irony) for us to queue under. They graciously still provided us coolers filled with chilled bottled water.   Since the ballot was the shortest we’ve ever seen — just one choice between two wannabe Senators — our 30-minute wait time was drastically smaller than the 90-120 minute of the two previous ones.

So, readers can bathe in the unintentional “Welcome to Georgia” humorous zeitgeist, here’s a photo of the signage outside the polling place.

Yes, really old (75+ years) geezers and the handicapped get head of line privileges, but gun-toting is not allowed. I would have included a photo of the local uniformed law officers stationed just around the corner outside the polling building entrance’s double doors, but camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited as are photos of the signs regarding this activity.

I remain resolutely unsure why an officer of the peace was needed each time we early voted during the past many years, given the average age of people in line was well over 60 and too decrepit to be packing anything other than inhalers.

We’re nothing down here, if not fully informed about our Ps-n-Qs.

We love this place and its people.
