Arrias and His Muse: A Christmas in Verse

Sanctuary

A Siberian beast stalks the high plains,
From the mountains the frost giants descend,
Scouring the land before them,
In their storm-blast mighty trees will bend.

Alone on the plain a dacha stands,
Proof against the cruelest gale,
The Master and the Mistress of this house,
Sip their cognac, they will prevail.

A cheery fire, a well-thumbed book,
While outside the storm grows worse,
Hurricane-like gusts thunder past,
Inside they calmly converse.

The dacha groans, ’tis a fearsome storm
Wind howls, deep drifts of Snow,
But inside the high plains sage is warm,
Sanctuary found at Varykino.

Christmas Sonnet 2022

The dogs hustle out and then quickly in,
Cold winter wind, golden dawn hints of sun,
Back from Church, some much to be done!
The kitchen’s a mess, now where to begin?
The Master of the house prepares the beef,
The good Mistress readies several pies,
A guest arrives, bearing a surprise,
Drops jacket, kicks boots off, What a relief!
Welcome, join in, no formalities observed,
Relax! Just stay inside out of the gale!
Join in! Chop or dice or tell a good tale,
Soon all is done, Hurrah! Dinner is served!
Now is high time to raise a cup of Cheer,
Joy to all in this house, Christmas is here!
