Arrias: “Let’s Get Out of the Lifeboat!”

The World Economic Forum has just concluded. During it we had the repeated pronouncements from the Leading Luminaries of our day that doom is upon us unless we commit, to quote our climate czar, “Money, money, money, money, money.”

Should we?

To answer that, it is instructive to recall that in the late 1970s the “polar vortex” was used to explain why we were about to enter an ice age. This past week the same polar vortex – now a creation of global warming, was used to explain why it was so cold in the northern hemisphere, it was rolled out as “proof” of global warming.

We are told – preached to – that we are in a crisis, a crisis of such magnitude that, per our Climate Czar, nothing else, to include wars or the PRC’s use of slavery and child labor or their flooding the US with fentanyl, must be allowed to interfere with our pursuit of a solution, a global solution to our rapidly heating world. We are told, for instance, that the world would be much improved if 1 billion people would just give up meat and eat insects instead.

Recall that many of these same people have been making predictions for the last 4 decades. The oceans will boil, the seas will rise, the mountains will fall. More than a decade ago, with complete earnestness, we were told that we had less than 10 years before the heating was too late, we were told that by 2020 children in the United Kingdom would grow up and never see snow, we were told that island nations in the central Pacific would vanish. But, even leaving aside all these blatantly false, and in may cases comic predictions, and ignoring how temperature readings before the 1970s have all been “adjusted,” and the further back in time you go, the more they have been adjusted down, so that current temperatures seem to be much higher, or the use of temperature readings at airports – which are warmer than the surrounding terrain (the tarmac absorbs heat…), all that aside, there is a much simple demonstration that this is a con game.

The demonstration is this: the people telling the story don’t really believe it.

The earth has been described by some as a “life boat.” We are all alone in the big, mean universe and there is no place else to go. We must preserve and protect it as it is this fragile little blue jewel in the middle of the dark sky.

Hmmm… When a ship holds an abandon ship drill, the Captain is watching how the crew executes various procedures. The Captain is not particularly worried about getting himself into a lifejacket and then into a lifeboat. That’s because he knows it’s an exercise, it’s a drill. It’s not real.

If the likes of our Climate Czar really, in his heart, believed we have, at most, 10 years before doom is upon us, 10 years before any correction will be too late, if all these folks demanding action really were convinced something needed to be done now, that we really needed to “get in the life boat,” I suspect most of them would act accordingly.

When it’s warm out I like driving around with the windows down in the car. Even when it’s hot. I spent a summer in the Mid East courtesy of Uncle Sam with a vehicle that had no air conditioning and it really didn’t bother me. One day this past summer, on a nice, hot Tidewater Virginia day, I spent several hours driving around counting cars that had their windows down. As I recall I counted 15 in several hours of driving. Except for me, and one convertible, they were all pickup trucks, and I think all but one of the pickups was a construction crew of some sort.

Drive around your neighborhood in the summer: see many houses with open windows? How many houses are not air conditioned?

Until the 1930s no buildings in Washington DC were air conditioned. How many government buildings built in Washington in the last 30 years even have windows you can open?

Did anybody serve insects at Davos? Is anybody at Davos eating less Waygu beef? What was the temperature in the conference rooms – did they need to be heated at all with all those people? If they were really concerned about surviving in 10 years, wouldn’t this conference have been held virtually? 1,040 private jets flew in and out of Davos last week.

The simple truth is the Leading Luminaries are telling a good tale, but they don’t really believe it. If they did, like the Captain on a ship that is really sinking, they would don the life vest and proceed to their lifeboat station. But they aren’t. And until they do so, and demonstrate that they will lead by example, that they will only fly commercially, and then only when it is vital that they physically be some place, that they will turn off the air conditioners in their houses and cars, that they will eat insects rather than beef – until they do these things, until they lead by example because they really do fear for their very existence, then I have to conclude that even they know it is just a big scam to grab power. Until then, I think we all need to get out of the life boat.
