Author’s Note: I was looking at pictures of shattered buildings in Bakhmut, then I ran out to get groceries and this just popped into my head…

Time for Bakhmut to Burn

For days, for weeks, for months,
The siege guns have pounded away,
A city shattered, houses now but rubble,
The guns fire all night, all day.

A thousand other cities,
Some long forgotten in history’s dust,
Have fallen under the siege guns’ roar,
It’s not fate, and it’s not just.

Men have made decisions,
Others will pay the butcher’s bill,
In the cold and rain and mud,
Trying their fellow man to kill.

Thousand have already died,
Ten thousand homes have been destroyed,
A city of 70,000 souls,
Now lifeless, a shattered void.

Now they fight over nothing,
They fight in rain and mud and snow,
The battle drags on, and more men die,
They fight just to kill the foe.

It’s not fair and it’s not just
But now it’s Bakhmut’s turn,
To fall under the siege guns’ roar.
It’s time for Bakhmut to burn.
