Arrias: July 4th
Author’s Note: I have been pestered by my Muse … it won’t win any prizes but there it is!

To Our Founding Fathers
What were they thinking,
Why would they even dare,
Fight the British empire?
They didn’t have a prayer.
The British had thousands of troops,
The Colonies really had none,
Just some militias and crazy farmers,
Most armed only with a squirrel gun.
A General who was a farmer,
And a Rhode Island Quaker,
A bookseller for the gunner,
They would be lucky to hold one acre.
And of their Navy? They had none,
The Royal Navy had several hundred,
And almost half were ships of the line,
Perhaps they should have stayed in bed.
At Lexington and Concord,
The crazy farmers made the Redcoats pay,
Bunker Hill a Pyrrhic victory,
The British left Boston on St Patrick’s Day.
Many vicious battles were fought,
It was a hard fought war,
But fight on indeed they did,
They knew what they were fighting for.
For 8 long years they fought,
A more perfect union to form,
To throw off a distant king,
And the very essence of government transform.
They fought and died for our freedom,
Lift a glass and a prayer,
To our Founding Fathers,
Few in history can compare!
