Jokes and Jurisprudence
There was some laughter this morning out on The Patio. The Salts are still amused by the circus happening in some of the courtrooms across the East Coast of the Continental United States. Former President Trump was indicted for another 13 counts of criminal conduct in Georgia, the state, not the independent nation in Eastern Europe.
There are three other legal proceedings against the former President, and a seemingly improbable set of violations associated with the current occupant of the Oval Office and the Resolute Desk. It has been a couple centuries of independent government here in America, so this is all pretty amazing. There is a body of thought that there might have been some meandering in the Body Politic during the last election for that office. We took a poll at the time out on The Patio’s gray concrete. You may recall how strange it was that five states simultaneously quit counting ballots. That had not happened before, and we knew then there would be excitement to come. ‘
It would be more efficient to depict the time-line to the election next year as a linear thing, but you probably already have the feeling that things have been laid out along parallel events in the legal arena. In fact, it might look like there was an effort to coordinate court appearances with national debates and activities leading to the voting event. The idea that a state prosecutor ca bring charges against the President is another new one. It has the possibility of changing everything, since who in their right mind would set themselves up to be prosecuted by a system that controls criminal what is defined as illegal activity?
Mr. Trump faces more than 700 years in jail on the current line-up of RICO charges. That would be a dozen or so life sentences for a man of his age. There is no word on whether the potential charges against Mr. Biden will be brought. Or more strictly speaking, who might be arraigned, indicted or otherwise held before the bar of justice. One thing is for sure: things seem to work a little differently than they used to. And as we have occasionally observed in the past, “What could go wrong?”
