An Armistice This Day
We know the new name for the day, but there are the remnants of a hurricane darkening the Piedmont sky above and the rain from the south is a uniform steady soak. There has been talk about early November weather of late amid trouble around the world. The anniversary of the wreck of ore-carrier Edmund Fitzgerald up on the Big Lake was one. Reports from the Ukraine and predictions of dark wet cold mark this change of season. And hearing the tales of dark hungry chill in the European night.
This holiday came from an Armistice that ended a modern horror. The Great War concluded on the 11th hour of the 11th Day of the 11th month of 1918.
Naturally, the name had to change when there was a bigger war to fight just two decades from those moments of silence on the front. And then a long Cold One, punctuated periodically with white heat. Then a Global one against terror itself. Within it, we began a movement of additional change. We hope we are ready for what is in our collective future. On this day that celebrates the arrival of Peace, we are in that moment of change again. So we join in tribute to those who served, and who are serving still. Even when the nights are long and chill is profound.
