Arrias and His Muse: New Year’s Eve 2022
The year began like any other,
Full of hope, wonder, fear and surprises,
Troubles and wars and rumors of war,
And now another year arises.
Last year was just the same in this,
A bright future beckoned to all,
What was possible or what would be,
Just who would make that call?
A New York Judge showed us all
How to hit a home run with style,
A Supreme Court judge asked to define woman
Stuttered and stammered a while.
Over the year there grew many crises,
Mere rumors blossomed into war,
And a hint of inflation became
What we had not seen for decades four.
We learned some more about the flu,
And about the agencies that guard our health,
And about some of the folks in charge,
Oh, my, how they gathered wealth.
Tsar Vlad went looking for war,
And found one in Ukraine,
But Kiev has stood, defiant,
And Russia now shares the pain.
Welcome to the 21st century,
Where warfare would seem familiar to Junkers,
Artillery is once again queen,
And we’re back to trenches and bunkers.
That war stumbles into the new year,
And politicians exploit these crises,
And spend like drunken sailors,
They should have read from von Mises.
The world now has 8 billion souls,
And governments cut the use of fertilizer,
How do they think to feed that many?
We have more people but not the wiser.
And more folks came up with policies,
To convert just how we live,
Solar panels for our electricity,
Fusion still has nought to give.
The numbers don’t seem to add up,
But I’m sure it will turn out all right,
The White House hints they’ve a plan
To make the Sun shine at night.
The Sun will shine all the time,
The wind will steadily blow,
Crops will mysteriously harvest themselves,
And demand for energy won’t grow.
And if you believe all that,
And pooh-pooh the idea of a food riot,
Fear not, the Great Reset has a plan,
You’ll just love the new insect diet.
Yes, all us plebs will eat grasshoppers,
And “steaks” made of lichen and moss,
But not the elites, the very special,
Like all the jackasses at Davos.
The world is growing warmer,
Our leaders insist – so sage!
45 years ago the same weather patterns
Were used to forecast a new Ice Age.
Europe too pays for solar madness,
Carbon dioxide – you know the plant food,
“Too much, turn off the oil and gas,”
And now winter is chilling the blood.
Global Warming, Global cooling,
Not enough wind or too hard it doth blow,
In Buffalo it’s just too darn cold,
And solar panels under 5 feet of snow.
But we’re told there are just too many people,
And I’m down with that, I won’t lie,
Think how great the world would be
If all those leftist jackasses would die.
Sri Lanka bought into the green madness
The country teeters on collapse,
We have a ceasefire in Ethiopia,
But fears persist of a relapse.
The Jonger once again fires missiles,
And Xi is now god-king for life,
But death comes even for god-kings,
Old age, disease, or a knife.
Other wars continue, In every corner of the globe,
Yemen, Syria, Myanmar, and Taiwan heating up,
But it’s good for certain kinds of business,
Sort of like the Arms of Krupp.
China making billions in the drug game,
Our Southern border a source of distress,
So put up more fences — in Washington,
To protect the jerks who caused all the mess.
And China and the Commies continue
With every nasty little trick,
Lock-downs, Oppression, Social credit scores,
Big Tech assists – With just one click!
Monitored, tracked, and bugged,
Everything you say or do or think,
Soon Big Brother will monitor everything!
“Should you really have that second drink?”
And China wants more and more,
More Money, More Weapons, More Land,
Hong Kong, Tibet, India, Taiwan,
Ain’t the CCP just grand?!?!
Xi is really just a cuddly panda,
Hug you close, protect you from cold,
He just wants to be everyone’s daddy,
And You Better Do What You’re Told!
And of course there is Afghanistan,
Those guys really do take the prize,
This year we gave a billon bucks
To a country we don’t even recognize.
In Washington the madness continues,
Even the FBI lies through its teeth,
We shudder to lift all the covers
And find out what really lies beneath.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics
Proves once again what we know to be true,
Numbers don’t really lie,
But government statisticians do.
Inflation highest in decades,
But the truth is far worse than it looks,
Unemployment much worse than they tell us,
More bureaucrats cookin’ the books.
The Fed was as usual part of the clown show,
Except some guy in Phillie missed the brief,
And told the truth about the work force,
As Charlie Brown would say: Good Grief!
Where do we go from here,
How does any of this end?
I’m afraid I have bad news,
Based on the historical trend.
None of this will end soon,
If history is any guide,
So for 2023 all I have to say is:
Fasten your seat belts – it’s gonna be a bumpy ride!
