Back to Normal

(Mr. John Dean, disbarred attorney and convicted felon lectures us on the finer points of obstruction of justice.)

This has been a tough couple days- Manhattan shuddering with the helicopter crash yesterday that made some think 9/11 was back again. There was a curious void in the regular broadcasts- all the talking heads tried to follow Mr. Trump’s schedule in Japan and Europe, and bless them, they appear to be as tired as we are and they needed some downtime.

But everybody is back now, and with a couple days to get over jet-lag, we will be back in the carnival of The Swamp run amok on the way to 2020.

Chairman Jerry Nadler of the House Judiciary Committee summoned ancient warrior and felon John Dean to comment on the similarities between Mr. Trump and Richard Nixon. Mr. Dean may have orchestrated the whole thing from the Plumber’s break-in at the Watergate to the cover-up that nailed Tricky Dick. There appears to be no relationship to a non-crime in the current affair of state, much less any stained dresses, but never mind.

Mr. Dean has been dining out on the fruits of his crimes for a very long time and knows nothing about what happened in the run-up to the 2016 election, but that was not what this was about to begin with. We will see where it goes, though it does already seem a little….ridiculous.

I watched the Watergate Hearings with a WWI vet we called Pop. He wasn’t doing anything else, nor would aspire to it at that point, and I was young and between gigs and too stupid to know what would happen in the out-years to come.

It was interesting to hear the perspective of a really experienced person who actually remembered the First War, and all the downstream things that happened because if it. Ohio Volunteer Infantry. We had that family connection in common.

Anyway, I have to echo the standard boilerplate from all DC speech-givers that any day out of Washington is a good day. The farm is nice today. Lot of rain yesterday, the grass is verdant, and Frank the Landscaper will be by after he gets off his day job. The Buzzards are forgetting our agreement. I have a nesting couple and a couple little guys pooping in the barn again- not radically different than the talking heads coming back from overseas- and I may have to do a pyrotechnic demonstration of resolve if they start coming back to roost on the deck.

We had a social compact. It has been violated. There will be consequences.

Challenges to country living are so different than those in the city. But they are actually the same, you know? The ones here actually look you in the eye when pooping on your patio. They want you to ignore it back up in Northern Virginia and pretend you can’t see.
