Life & Island Times: War is Over
Author’s note: Breaking news on the back pages of today’s morning newspapers says the US House of Representatives Appropriations Committee voted in a bipartisan fashion yesterday to rescind the 2001 authorization for the use of military force that underlays much of the past 16 years of American warring. The ostensible reason for this was reported to be a reassessment of the scale and scope of America’s military commitments for the first time in more than a decade.
Regardless of the reason, are these wars over?
Hey, heard the war might be over
We’re now all a lot older
As our grand kids become soldiers
Eating breakfast when the towers fell, while the news was read
Since then countless nightly news stories detailed lots of dead
Unborn now living, soon be dead
Bullets struck jihadis’ heads
Home front watched podcasted wars
Each proud firefight brags
We war on terrorists lives
Now we bomb ISIS flags
But it’s not over for Allah’s soldiers
It’s not over for Allah’s soldiers
Uh
Fewer graves for American soldiers
We hold them close on hollow shoulders
Our American soldiers
Maimed, mangled on distant battlefields
Missing limbs
Their nightmares real
Minds, arms and legs
Have been blown away
Useless stumps
Their battlefield victories thrown away
Mothers sing songs of woe
Fathers turn
Don’t want to know
Families torn apart
By their soldiers with a purple heart.
But perpetual war ain’t over
These wars ain’t over
They’re not over
Wars ain’t over
It ain’t over, baby!
Ain’t over, baby!
Oh all right, yeah!
Ain’t over, yeah ha ha!
All over!
Ain’t over, baby!
Oh, oh yeah!
Ain’t over
Ain’t ever gonna be over
Yeah . . .
