Marlow: Members of a Cult

Editor’s Note: It appears we have been victorious in the battle against the dread COVID. The President read a nice speech summarizing the triumph of his last month or so in office, and we may be able to gather in small family groups by the 4th of July, which is a holiday that apparently may still be celebrated in a modest way despite its roots in a patriarchal, racist and homophobic society that invented chattel bondage. I think I liked the old way better, since that rubric is only true if you consider yourself a person of those times. Then you would go to war with the King. Marlow contributes his thoughts this morning in his usual lyrical manner.

Author’s Note: Now that another couple trillion is on the way after last night’s nationwide speech, I was moved to write this.

Members of a Cult

We are indeed cult members. Just observe and consider . . .

“During the few moments that we have left before the next commercial break, we’re gonna talk, right down to you, in a language that we’re sure you out there can easily understand . . .” (but let’s observe them closely with the volume muted)

Look into their eyes, what do you see?
The cult of personality
They know our anger, they know our dreams
They offer everything we wanna be, oh
It’s the cult of personality
Like Mussolini and Kennedy
It’s the cult of personality, the cult of personality
The cult of personality

Neon lights, Lotto Grand Prize
When social media speaks, its reflection lies
We don’t have to watch TV
Social media sets us free

They sell the things we need to be
They’re the smiling faces on our small screens, oh
It’s the cult of personality
They exploit us, still, we love them truly
They tell us one and one makes three, oh
It’s the cult of personality
Like Joseph Stalin and Gandhi, oh
It’s the cult of personality, the cult of personality
The cult of personality

Neon lights, Nobel Prize
When these leaders speak, these leaders lie
They won’t follow you or me
Only we can set us free

They give us “fortunes,” they promise us fame
They give us money in their party’s name
We’re every person we need to be
Oh, we were, the, cult, of, per, so, na, lity
We’re now the cult of, we are the cult of, we are the cult of, we are the cult of
We are the cult of, we are the cult of, we are the cult of, we are the cult of
Me

(They go to commercial with the following hidden persuaders softly repeated in the background)

Just ask what your country can do for you
You no longer have to fear fear itself

With a tip of the hat to Living Colour.
