PACIFIC FLEET COMMEMORATES THE VICTORY AT MIDWAY, 2016

18 May 2016

Gentle Readers: I got in from Vegas last night and the Time Zone Trainwreck has hit me like a freight. Nice little place they have out there. With great pals and extended family, and the possibility that the Raiders and a hockey team are coming, and where the bars are open 24 x 7, well, you never can tell… It is, for sure, a marvelous place and I had a fabulous time!

In the other wreckage, not associated with Pacific Coast Time, in the morning email back here in DC, the Home of Bad ideas, I discovered this promotion for the events that will happen on the tranquil Island of O’ahu in the mid-Pacific long ago. This is going to be a great week to be in Hawaii. I will drag you back to the Med in a while- but in the meantime, in-between time, I will be telling you about each of the major events happening around Pearl Harbor.

PACIFIC FLEET COMMEMORATES THE VICTORY AT MIDWAY, 2016

Screen-Shot-2016-05-18-at-9.55

Nearly three quarters of a century after the battle that changed the course of history, CAPT Dale C. Rielage, current occupant of the post at PACFLT held by legendary CAPT Eddie Layton under ADM Chester Nimitz during the battle, has put the word out on an exciting series of events to mark the battle. He passed along the status of the current events for Midway Week 2016. It is going to be an exciting and inspirational commemoration! A motivated cadre of Junior Officers, coordinated by the redoubtable Cathy Perez, is leading the charge for a week of celebration that will demonstrate the visibility and relevance of Naval Intelligence across the commands on the island, and continue to build teamwork that in the words of RADM Paul Becker is founded on “teamwork, tone and tenacity,” the very qualities that defined the work of Joe Rochefort, Eddie Layton, Mac Showers and the other members of The Dungeon team who broke the codes and permitted the deep penetration of the enemy that enabled victory.

It is going to be an action-filled week:

3 JUN Midway Atoll Murals Unveiling/Panel Discussion at the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island
051816-2

4 JUN Battle of Midway Formal Gala onboard the USS Missouri (BB-63)
051816-3

6 JUN Station HYPO Tour of The Dungeon Spaces where the JN-25 Japanese Naval Codes were broken
051816-4

6 JUN NIP Social with RADM Paul Becker at the Hickam O Club
051816-5

7 JUN Formal Battle of Midway Ceremony at PACFLT HQ at Makalapa Crater

We will be talking about the detailed plan for each event in the days to come. Stay tuned! But make your reservations now!
