Swamp Postcard: The Scandal de Jour
It is easier to predict the next scandal, which is determined by what day it is, than to try to sweep up the de jours of the last week of political maneuverings. Great fun, and thoroughly enjoyable. The State of New York continues it’s battle with the Federal Government. The valiant defenders of liberty have already declared the National Rifle Association an enemy institution, and are seeking to have the organization expunged while not seeking indictment of the officials who allegedly mis-used member contributions for personal expenses. It is a fun romp through justice, or what passes for it these days.
This morning came word that former Presidential advisor Steve Bannon did the same thing with funds contributed to his “build the wall” campaign. Three other citizens were swept up in this one, which is just a component of the ongoing campaign to depict anything associated with Mr. Trump as venal and corrupt. There was no mention of the SWAT teams or helicopters used to facilitate his detention, which will now cost him personally to defend himself.
That is how lawfare works. Reach in the pockets of those you oppose and bleed them dry. Think about what General Flynn has had to fork out in legal fees! On the other side of that, members of the former Mueller Team, all reliable operatives, are apparently feeling some heat with the guilty plea offered by one of their former legal staff about altering documents to secure FISA warrens to surreal the Trump campaign. The supposition is that lawyer Clinesmith will try to save his pocketbook and help unroll the weaponization of Federal agencies and the Intelligence community to spy on anyone who opposed them. It is quite remarkable, and will doubtless play out until it is no longer useful.
What does it all mean? Oddly, not much except everything. The capture of the Executive Branch would enable all the folks connected to the insurance policy against an improbable Trump win back in 2016 to walk free. To that end, the Biden nomination for the Presidency is lurching to conclusion at a strange infomercial conducted by Zoom at the Democratic Convention. Still to come is the Republican version of the same thing under the guise of the ig emergency of the pandemic, which will also continue until there is no political advantage to be gained.
So, this is all fireworks leading up to the train-wreck of an election. It is going to be a fun ride, with all sorts of daily issues. The fight over funding for the Postal Service is both a scandal de jour in which the President is allegedly attempting to suppress votes. Meanwhile, controversies continue over what exactly a vote actually is, and how many of them can be cast by persons who are either non-citizens or deceased. It is going to be a fantastic and long lasting delay as the parts are played out. Both sides pointing fingers at fraud, and demands for the House of Representatives to take decisive, if unconstitutional, action.
So, the scandal de jour is fun, but just part of the work-up to the big show that will last for weeks around an election whose results will be rejected by whoever loses. Narrow wins by either candidate will be disputed, or rejected. Landslides by either will be proof there is no integrity at the ballot box. It is exciting to be a citizen in moments of high hilarity in our historical record. I guarantee there will be plenty to see, and fervently expressed opinions. Unlike votes, opinions are limited to one per person. At least they used to be.
More as it happens. I am sure the scandals to come will be bigger and better, more lurid and exquisitely personal. It is a new world, dropped right into the one we used to live in.
God bless America!
