Thoughts Upon Graduation
Life and Island Times May 8 2016
This week Marlow will graduate. Well to be exact, his first grandchild will graduate from college.
With this event, Marlow will officially become a senior citizen. Reflecting on this, he thought about his four-year long estrangement from this child’s mother – his first born child.
He chose to ignore that and focus on the joy of the event and its meaning. He intends to write his granddaughter a keepsake letter. Since she is a millennial, a paper letter would likely get lost in the digital shuffle of her life. Sigh – no heavy stock paper, no monogram letterhead, no fancy inkwell pen writing . . . .
Should he welcome her to his world? Congratulate her on this accomplishment? Sure, but been there done that many times already.
So with the date at the top, he will tell her:
· he is grateful that he has this opportunity to let her know what’s in his heart
· some stories from his life and the lessons learned he learned
· how to get from the here to the where she wants
o believe she can
o keep her faith, be strong and sure
o keep her heart full of joy
o keep yearning, learning, trying and smiling
o keep her love strong and true
o embrace ways to grow
o take careful steps and do right
o take pride in each thing done
He might include some pictures of her and him he took along the way and will end his letter by telling her that she is and will always be his first.

Wish him luck!
