Weather Forecast: Holiday Lights Looming!
All right! Only a year to go until that election thing! We are trying to get organized, since there has been a flurry of the smaller holidays lately, the ones that serve to prepare us for the Big Ones. Like today- there are 15 special days for the 18th alone, including celebration of the Battle of Vertieres down in Haiti.
We are flexible and have even added a new one, the Asia Pacific Economic Forum (APEC). World leaders from the 21 member economies of the annual summit are leaving San Francisco Friday, including US President Biden.
Yesterday was Mr. Biden’s final day at the conference and included a bilateral meeting with Mexican President Obrador at the Moscone Center Friday morning. Splash was watching the flatscreen presentation and was struck by how the leader of the nation to the south resembles financier George Soros!
There were several other major topics raised during the hour-long bilateral meeting. Two naturally stood out: the Border Security issue and the trafficking of the drug fentanyl north. America’s Sanctuary Cities have discovered the minor component of the massive expense routinely imposed on border states is equally unsatisfactory for them.
So, geographic areas like urban America and Europe are flooded with people and demographic change.
Do not get us wrong! We adore Veteran’s Day, and have made great progress in not getting the Halloween fun all mixed up in it. We have a pal out in one of the square states who regularly shares some profound insights. The one this morning was about demographic changes in our merry spinning planet.
We have muttered about some of the consequences of heavy-handed policy implementation in China. As a talking point, we often hear the number ’40 million’ excess male births as a product of selection now available in the reproductive cycle. The availability of those excess young men as soldiers has been a factor in discussions about the fate of Taiwan.
Some of the other social factors we have tried to follow include the “Population Bomb” theory. It was first published by Stanford University’s Paul Ehrlich in 1970. Our overflowing global population was a popular panic, as was the Renewed Ice Age.
One government took dramatic action on Professors Ehrlich’s theory: the Peoples Republic of China. Chinese government policy in the late 1970s and early ’80s limited many families to a single child in order to reduce population growth. The program had many negative consequences, however, and was discontinued in 2016. Some of the children from those draconian policy days have produced the children walking and wading into Arizona and Texas.
There are some major changes coming for the eight billion humans who currently reside on our Earth. We are pleased we are going to be an afterthought when that decline kicks in!
